WASHINGTON?D.C. - The Avalon Black Knights, in the middle of a marathon seven game road trip, defeated Perry St. Prep 22-14 to snap a two-game losing streak and take the lead in the Capital Area Football Conference.
Prep started the game unable to run against the Black Knights, but put together two passes, burning safeties Rachid Ibrahim and Isaac Boyd deep to jump out to a 6-0 lead.
Switching from man to zone coverage, the Black Knights were able to shutdown Perry for most of the first half.
A complete pass in the red zone on a quick slant set Perry up for its second score when freshman cornerback Michael Herbert knocked the ball loose, it fluttered into the end zone where it was scooped up by an alert Perry St. Prep receiver for the second score.
An interception by Jacquiell Veii returned to the two-yard line set up Avalon for their first score when Ibraham took it off tackle for the first Avalon score.
Avalon trailed 14-6 at half, but took over in the second half, shutting down the Perry St. passing attack and asserting its ground dominance.
Ibrahim (27 carries for 186 yards) decimated the Perry St. line.
He was assisted by Veii and junior Isaac Boyd.
The Avalon air attack was nearly non-existent, with junior quarterback Wyatt Karem completing two for four for just 12 yards passing.
Veii took one pass nearly to the house to cap the Black Knights first scoring drive of the second half.
That drive finished with a run, and ended up with the game tied 14-14.
Veii then took a punt return nearly to the house and the Black Knights again gashed Perry for their third and final score.
The Black Knights, 3-3 sit atop of the CAFC and face St. Mary’s Ryken in Leonardtown this week before traveling to Riverdale Baptist for its final conference game.
