Seven All-Sentinel honorees have been selected to participate in the Big 33 Football Classic this summer.

The all-star game – scheduled for June 15 at Pennsylvania’s Hersheypark Stadium – features a team of elite players from Maryland against top players from the state of Pennsylvania.

Gilman head coach Biff Poggi will guide the Maryland team for the 2013 Classic.

Quince Orchard head coach Dave Mencarini, the Sentinel Coach of the Year, is among a group of seven Maryland assistants that will serve on Poggi’s coaching staff.

The Big 33 roster includes Quince Orchard senior linebacker Marcus Newby, the Sentinel Defensive Player of the Year, along with former high school teammate Kieran Gregory, a University of Richmond recruit.

Northwest senior Tyler Ambush was among a group of three players from the Germantown public school who tried out for the team but the 5-foot-7, 185-pound wide receiver was the only Jaguar selected to participate in the game.

“I feel excited and honored that I can play in the biggest game ever,” said Ambush, who joins Damascus offensive lineman Andrew Nickell (William & Mary) and Avalon standouts Rachid Ibrahim (Pitt) and Jacquille Veii (Maryland) on the roster.

The high school football rivalry between the two states is being renewed after a 21-year hiatus. Pennsylvania and Maryland competed against each other from 1985-1992 before Maryland was replaced by Ohio.

Maryland holds a 2-6 record against their Pennsylvania counterparts.

A five-year agreement was forged between officials from the Maryland Football Coaches Association and the Big 33 Scholarship Foundation, Inc. to continue a game that has been billed as the “Super Bowl of High School Football” in past years.

“I’m excited,” said Ibrahim. “I think it’s a good accomplishment [to be selected] to represent the state.”
