A Montgomery County product has been honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Maryland senior and Northwest High graduate Marcus Whitfield was named ACC Linebacker of the Week for his performance in the Terrapins’ 32-21 victory at Connecticut on Saturday.
Whitfield led a defensive attack that registered six sacks against UConn quarterback Chandler Whitmer.
The Germantown product recorded a career-high three sacks, which is tied for the highest single-game total in the country this season and leads the nation with 5.5 sacks.
“I worked out over the offseason with the team, went through the drills, had a great offseason,” said Whitfield. “Definitely liked working with the team on the defensive scheme. I feel like in my position I know all of what goes on all around me; when coaches put me in a position to make a play I make the play.”
During his tenure at Northwest, Whitfield was a two-way standout at the Germantown public school where he played tight end and outside linebacker for then-Jaguars head coach Andrew Fields.
Fields described Whitfield as an “explosive kid” and said he’s not surprised by his success on the collegiate gridiron.
