MONTGOMERY VILLAGE – Despite a game-high 21 points from sophomore guard Danielle Durjan, the Watkins Mill Wolverines fell to visiting Tuscarora Friday night in a first round playoff game, 72-53.

Watkins Mill senior Angel Hall finished with 12 points in her final high school appearance. The Wolverines finished the season at 10-13.

Tuscarora was led by standout juniors Shania Johnson and Katherine Moore who each scored 18 points in the win. Tuscarora senior Caitlin Cavin finished with ten points.

Johnson, a 5-foot-2 point guard who is Frederick County’s leading scorer, showcased her deft passing and shooting skills during the game. She scored 14 of her 18 points after intermission and set up teammates for open shots throughout the contest.

Tuscarora jumped out to a 20-7 first quarter lead but Watkins Mill stormed back, outscoring the Titans 16-9 in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 29-23 at the intermission.

Tuscarora held a 40-35 advantage with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter but closed out the period on an 8-4 run that was punctuated by Cavin’s 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Tuscarora first-year head coach Robbie Turner said Cavin’s three-point shot gave the Titans “a great boost because they were all excited about that and knowing that I don’t like my post players to shoot threes so to have that that’s huge.”

Johnson accounted for eight points in Tuscarora’s 10-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter and helped the Titans advance.

Watkins Mill head coach Ivan Hicks said he’s optimistic for next season with the return of Durjan, junior Chantelle Nazzal and talented freshman Lauren Montgomery.

“Lauren’s going to be a very good player here,” said Hicks.
