Good Counsel opens the 2013 football campaign Friday night with a nationally televised contest against Gilman.
Johnny Unitas Stadium on the Towson University campus is the site of Friday’s game between two of the state’s top-ranked teams.
The Falcons lost several big-time players at the skill positions including quarterback Brendan “Whitey” Marshall (Virginia), running back Dorian O’Daniel (Clemson) and wide receiver Kendall Fuller (Virginia Tech).
However, the Falcons return a talented cast of characters that includes All-Americans Sam Mustipher (Notre Dame) and Jesse Aniebonam who is scheduled to announce his college decision during the game.
Aniebonam, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound defensive end with an NFL pedigree, is expected to choose among a list of schools that includes Maryland, Virginia Tech, Clemson and North Carolina.
A 2014 U.S. Army All-American, Aniebonam is a cousin of NFL defensive end Osi Umenyiora of the Atlanta Falcons.
Meanwhile, the Good Counsel offense will feature junior Bryan Strittmatter at quarterback and Leo Ekwoge at running back. C.J. Carroll returns at wide receiver for the Falcons. Mustipher, an Under Armour All-American, will handle the blocking duties on the offensive line at left tackle.
In addition to Aniebonam, the defense also boasts highly-touted junior lineman Darius Fulwood and senior safety and linebacker Kobie Walker, a Kentucky recruit.
Good Counsel, the state’s top-ranked team, finished 11-1 last season and seeks to capture the Olney private school’s fifth consecutive Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship.
“I’m looking very forward to the season,” said Ekwoge, who recently committed to Western Michigan. “I think we’re going to do really good in the WCAC.”
