Maryland senior linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield suffered a season-ending injury in the Terrapins’ 33-13 loss to Georgia Tech Saturday at Byrd Stadium.

The team announced on Monday that Hartsfield suffered a torn ACL and will be out for the remainder of the season. The North Carolina native was injured late in the second quarter against Georgia Tech and had to be helped off the field.

Hartsfield started all nine games for Maryland this year and leads the team in tackles with 78 stops this season. He has also totaled seven tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one interception and two fumble recoveries. Hartsfield has amassed 338 career tackles, a mark that ranks 10th nationally among active players and 15th in school history.

“This is another tough loss for the program,” said Maryland head coach Randy Edsall. “Demetrius is a captain and has been a leader of this defense both on and off the field. I feel terrible for him because I know how much the game means to him. To have his senior year cut short is just disheartening. We will be here to support him through the rehab process and help him with his transition towards the next stage of his career.”

Hartsfield joins a laundry list of injured Terrapins that includes four quarterbacks, three of whom also had their seasons ended by torn ACLs.

Maryland lost quarterback C.J. Brown to an ACL tear in the preseason and Perry Hills and Caleb Rowe have suffered the same injury in the past few weeks. Meanwhile, Devin Burns, a converted wide receiver who played quarterback against N.C. State, suffered a Lisfranc (foot) injury against the Wolfpack and is also out for the season.
