NORTH BETHESDA – Montrose Christian’s quest to capture the 2013 National High School Invitational tournament was denied last Thursday as the Mustangs fell victim to Findlay Prep, 57-53, at Handley Center on the Georgetown Prep campus.

Despite a season-high performance from Ismail Wainright, Montrose Christian could not overcome the talented Findlay Prep team that boasts a roster chock full of Division I prospects.

“I thought our guys gave it their best effort,” Montrose Christian head coach Stu Vetter said afterward.

Nevada-based Findlay Prep, who entered the game as the nation’s top-ranked team with a perfect 34-0 record, was led by senior point guard and McDonald’s All-American Nigel Williams-Goss who scored a game-high 26 points.

The game marked a rematch of a regular season meeting between the two teams played in December. Montrose Christian suffered a five-point loss to the Pilots at the Iolani Classic in Hawaii.

Meanwhile, Montrose Christian seniors Cole Harrison and Wainright were the only Mustangs to finish in double figures.

Wainright, a Baylor signee, scored a team-high 21 points and Harrison chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds for the Mustangs.

“Ish was absolutely great,” said Vetter, who has declared Wainright to be the Rockville private school’s most heavily recruited player since Kevin Durant. “He worked hard on the ball screens and penetrations.”

The highlight of the game for Montrose Christian occurred near the end of the second period when Wainright sank a three-quarter court shot that beat the halftime buzzer. The basket made the ESPN SportsCenter Top Ten highlights at No. 7.

Vetter also had kind words for Wainright’s defensive prowess during the postgame news conference.

“Ish was our best defender and he’s one of the best defenders that I’ve had,” said Vetter. “He’s a great defensive player and you’re going to see that throughout his career.”
