Grief and nothing but heartbreak and anger

Aluminum Winged Caduceus Silver Spring MD

There is absolutely nothing worse in life, nothing, than to lay your child to rest.
Absolutely nothing.
The hole created in one's heart can never be filled. Combine this with the fact that six beautiful young children will grow up without their devoted father and we have a catastrophe of immeasurable proportion. That is the devastating loss I and my family and the family of my son face and will face for the rest of our lives.
My son made choices that made his life and the lives of those closest to him more complicated than they ever needed to be.
But he was also the most personable and likable individual you would ever want to meet and the person with the biggest heart.
He was also the most positive individual I have ever known and the devastation of his loss cannot be captured into words. However, this is an extremely personal loss and it is not my intention to share my grief with the readers of this newspaper.
What I will share with readers and what this column is about is my experience in dealing with the Philippines, specifically a Philippine hospital.

A presidency unhinged and unbelievable

trump thumbs up low res

Is it really possible that anyone running for President of the United States would not possess even the most basic understanding of the United States Constitution, specifically the separation of powers?  Is it possible that anyone holding the office of the President of the United States could be unaware that the separation of powers among the three branches of government is a cornerstone of our democracy?

Apparently the answer is yes on both counts.

Welcome to the Trump presidency.

Seniors and how they lose in state government

There are currently about three million seniors living in the state of Maryland and, of those, there are more than 850,000 over the age of 65. Each year, as the senior population loses members, new members join; those that were 64 last year become 65 this year. In two years those currently at 63 will join the club.
The senior club does at least one thing better than any other group; they vote. Accordingly, one must wonder why Governor Larry Hogan as well as the Maryland State Legislature have chosen to once again forget this rather considerable constituency when it comes time for some good old fashioned tax relief.

The federal government: here today, gone tomorrow?

White House Front Twilight

If the goal is to undermine the effectiveness of the federal government to such an extent that it justifies all claims that it is ineffective, there are two surefire ways to achieve this end. One is to underfund the agencies that comprise it to prevent those federal agencies from having enough staff to carry out their individual missions.

Call it voter suppression not fraud

Anyone remember the claims by President Donald Trump during the campaign that the election was “rigged” against him? Apparently with the president the “end justifies the means” as his claims have calmed down since his electoral college victory.
That is unless you listen to his claims that he actually won the popular vote even though Hillary won that metric by some 2.8 million voters.
The fact of the matter is if, indeed, there was any rigging of the election then it had more to do with the undue influence on the election of outside entities.

A ban by any other name...

Travel-Ban-Vignettes-1200x630

Donald J. Trump's instituting a ban on individuals from seven Muslim nations entering our country is not the first time a ban has been set in place but it clearly is a ban like none before it. In the aftermath of 9/11, the Bush administration instituted the No-Fly List and the Terrorist Watch List.
The No-Fly List is a list of individuals prohibited from boarding commercial aircraft for travel to or within the United States.
The Terror Watch List, a much longer list of names than the No-Fly List, consists of individuals suspected of some involvement with terrorism and as of June 2016 has some 1,877,133 names on it.
The difference between these lists and the banning of an entire religion from entering the United States as was just done by our new president is the difference between religious freedom and religious persecution.

An Inaugural to be remembered

IMG 1871

Often, in life, one finds oneself in a situation in which he is uncomfortably out of place. Welcome to my attendance at the inauguration of Donald J. Trump as the 45th president of the United States.
Sitting among the throngs of Trump supporters, it didn't take me long to realize I was in somewhat foreign territory.

Get an advance on the betting line

trump thumbs up low res

The betting line has been established and it is time to get your bets in. How long will Trump last in the Oval Office?
Will it be one year, two years, three years or four?
How many gamblers out there are willing to wage he will last into a second term?
These are not questions ordinarily asked about incoming presidents but they are certainly warranted for this president.

A review of the “Golden Rule”

Golden Rule

I sincerely and truly have always tried to live by the “Golden Rule”. “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”

Granted, I have also done unto others as they have done unto me, but I consider that to be simple justice.

During my career as a manager for the federal government, I was told by employees of mine that they liked working for me because I try not to ask them to do anything that I, myself, would never do.

They were correct.

Try some “Trickle Up” economics
