Playoff games are going on all over the county in a variety of sports. We take a look at the other sports in the county outside of football:
At the 2013 Maryland State Cross Country championships held at McDaniel College in Westminster, county athletes took top honors in the 2a, 3a, and 4a championships.
Claire Beautz, a junior from Poolesville High School, took fourth place in the 2a state finals with a time of 19minutes :14 seconds. Teresa Nardone, a freshman also from Poolesville, rounded out the 2a top 10 with a time of 19 minutes.32 seconds.
Chase Weaverling, a senior from Poolesville, won first place in the boys 2a championships with a time of 15 minutes 42 seconds.
Stephen Lang, a freshman from Poolesville, ranked 10th in the boys individuals with a time of 17 minutes and one second. Catocin High School, in Frederick County, prevailed over Poolesville to win first place in the team competition for the 2a boys.
County schools didn’t fare as well in the 3a championships. William Kirk, a junior at Rockville High School, ranked seventh in the individual boys championships with a time of 16 minutes and 29 seconds. Luke Simpson, a senior at Einstein High School, ranked 17th with a time of 16 minutes, 52 seconds. Thomas Johnson, of Frederick County, won first place in the boys
Isabel Griffith, of Dulaney Valley, took first place in girls 4a with a time of posting a win with a time of 18:26.2. This is WJ's 4th title overall but 1st since 1999. County schools accounted for ten out of the top 8 girl 4a runners. Ryan Forsyth of Severna Park took boys first place in the 4a regional championships. Daniel Bealy, a senior from Gaithersburg, finished second. County schools made up five out of the top 10 boys individual times. Severna Park High School in Anne Arundel County took first place for girls 4a title. Walter Johnson took the boys 4a team title.
Severna Park defeated Wooton 4-1 in the field hockey state championships held on November 9 at Washington College.
For the girls 3a state semifinals, River Hill defeated Damascus 4-1. Huntington will play River Hill in the state championships on November 14 at UMBC at 7:30p.m. Whitman defeated South River 1-0 in the 4a state regional finals. Whitman will take on Catonsville on November 16 at UMBC at 10a.m.
Poolesville will take on Patuxent in Calvert County, in the 2a state championships at University Maryland on November 16 at noon. In 3a, Damascus will play Glenelg in the regional championships at the Ritchie Coliseum at University of Maryland on November 12 at 6p.m. The winner will take on the winner of the La Plata and Bel Air match. The teams will play on November 12 at the Ritchie Coliseum at 8p.m. Wooton and Severna Park will meet in the 4a regional championships on November 13 at 6p.m. at the Ritchie Coliseum. The winner will take on the winner of the Dulaney and High Point game on November 13 at 8p.m. at the Ritchie Coliseum.
