GAITHERSBURG- Shayne Johnson, a father, football coach, and rapper died in a car accident on July 4.
Montgomery County Police say Johnson and Jean Marie Pollard were driving on East Summit Drive when a police officer noticed a black SUV driving with its high beams on. As the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the SUV accelerated and turned on E. Diamond Ave, where it disappeared from view.
At some point, the SUV left the roadway and struck a utility pole, a bus stop, a fire hydrant, and a pole support cable. The vehicle overturned and both passengers were ejected from the vehicle. Johnson died on the scene and Pollard was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police have not determined who was driving the SUV. Officer Rebecca Innocenti said Pollard may receive a traffic citation if police determine she was driving.
Johnson is a 2007 graduate of Magruder High School. He was an assistant football coach for the St. Francis Wolf Pack, now the Gaithersburg Football Association Wolf Pack, where he coached seven and eight year olds. Johnson also worked at the Star Diner Kentlands as a security guard.
Pollard was a mutual friend of Johnson and Stephanie Dove, mother of his daughter Ciara. She attended Watkins Mills High School.
On July 6, Johnson’s friends and family held a vigil for him at the accident site.
“Shayne was in my life from birth until he was 5 or 6 years old. Even though we lost touch, I never stopped loving him and he will always hold a special place in my heart. Like one of my own grandkids, he would come spend weekends at my house, and he absolutely adored our Dobermans,” said Robin Dutton.
Johnson’s funeral will be held on July 20 at 10a.m. at the Norbeck Community Church in Silver Spring. His family and friends will wear red in his honor.
