GAITHERSBURG - The City of Gaithersburg and Montgomery County Public Schools are collaborating on repairs to the Gaithersburg Aquatic Center, located at 2 Teachers Way.  The facility, which was built in 1975 and is co-owned by MCPS and operated by the City of Gaithersburg, has been closed since January of 2012, when cracks that compromised the building’s structural integrity were discovered in exterior support columns.

MCPS hired a structural engineer to assess the building and then proposed a corrective action plan.  City leaders, along with MCPS and the Board of Education, are collaborating on the repair/replacement of the external wall and columns and on other previously-scheduled repairs to the facility.  Construction is now underway and it is anticipated that the Aquatic Center will reopen in the fall of 2013.

“The Gaithersburg Aquatic Center is an important recreational amenity both for students at the adjacent Gaithersburg Middle School and for residents in the greater Gaithersburg area,” said Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz.  “I’m happy that through a collaborative partnership we will soon be able to get this facility up and running again.”

Facility updates will be communicated on the City’s website at and through the Aquatics Division electronic newsletter, which customers may receive by emailing

Those interested in water exercise are encouraged to participate in City-sponsored classes at the Quince Orchard Swim and Tennis Club.  Registration is ongoing for spring classes, which begin the first week of April.  The newly renovated outdoor Water Park, located at Bohrer Park, 512 S. Frederick Avenue, will open for the season on May 25, and registration for summer swim lessons is now open.

To promote safety in, on and around the water, Gaithersburg is joining with Rockville and Montgomery County to host a free Water Safety Day at the Gaithersburg Water Park on Friday, May 31 from 3:30-6:30 p.m.  For more information, contact the Gaithersburg Aquatics staff at 301-258-6445 or email
