GAITHERSBURG –  After lightning and inclement weather suspended Friday night’s Class 4A/3A playoff matchup between Quince Orchard and Thomas Johnson, the Cougars picked up where they left off and cruised Saturday to a 17-5 victory over the Frederick County school.

Quince Orchard sophomore attack Jake Christensen scored a hat trick while various Cougars netted two goals including Alex Light, Dylan Chaikin, Jack Harris, Spencer Nystrom and Grant Skipper. In all, twelve different players scored goals for Quince Orchard.

Thomas Johnson (4-12) was led by senior attack Alex Aguilar who finished with two goals.

Dylan Davey, Colby Fields and Travon Bristol each scored a goal while Thomas Johnson goalie Nick Sponyoe registered 14 saves.

Quince Orchard goalie John Barkanic registered seven saves.

After the win, Quince Orchard held an hour long practice session.

“We had to get ready for Urbana,” said Quince Orchard head coach David Gonzalez. “We got to turn around and play again on Monday.”

Unfortunately, Quince Orchard’s season came to a premature ending by virtue of Urbana’s 12-8 victory over the Cougars (10-5).

Quince Orchard’s season was highlighted by the Cougars’ 14-13 overtime victory against Churchill earlier this month. Chaikin finished with four goals and Light scored three goals. Barkanic, a St. Mary’s recruit, registered 20 saves.

“We just played a complete team game,” said Gonzalez. “The kids really believed we could win that game from the get-go. We just played up to our potential.”
