MCFRS Spokesperson Pete Piringer said firefighters responded to a call about a large trash fire at the Aston Woods apartment complex on Gateshead Manor Way in Silver Spring at around 10 a.m. Friday. Piringer said no one was injured in the fire.

Piringer said the driver of a garbage truck dumped his load of trash after seeing smoke coming from the back of his vehicle. Piringer added that firefighters do not know as of yet what caused the fire.

Abby Salisu, a resident at Aston Woods, became aware of the fire after hearing a bang outside her apartment.

“We heard somewhat of an explosion,” Salisu said.

Salisu looked out of her apartment window and noticed the large pile of trash on fire in the Aston Woods parking lot.

Salisu said she heard several more loud explosions coming from the blaze, which Piringer said sometimes happens in large fires.

“It’s not unusual to hear noises pop,” Piringer said.
