Local companies score Fortune 500 spots

Lockheed Martin LogoROCKVILLE - Four Montgomery County companies have scored spots in the annual Fortune 500 list.

Bethesda-based Lockheed Martin ranked the highest out of the companies at No. 59 with annual revenues of $45.4 billion; Marriott International Inc., also based in Bethesda, earned a spot at No. 219 with revenue of $12.8 billion; Discovery Communications, headquartered in Silver Spring, ranked at 460 with revenue of $5.3 billion; and Bethesda-based Host Hotels and Resorts ranked at 477 with an annual revenue of $5.3 billion.

The Montgomery County companies are the only Maryland headquartered companies to make the 2014 list.

The Fortune 500 list is an annual list compiled by Fortune Magazine that ranks the top 500 companies in the U.S. by their annual gross revenue.  Arkansas-based Wal-Mart ranked first on the list with $473.1 billion in sales. Exxon Mobile, Chevron, Berkshire Hathaway, and Apple Inc. rounded out the top five.

Other Maryland-based companies were near misses for the list. Fulton-based Colfax Corp. ranked at 579 with $4.2 billion in revenue and spice maker McCormick & Co. Inc., headquartered in the Baltimore area, ranked No. 591 with revenue of $4.1 billion. Other Maryland companies in the top 1,000 include T. Rowe Price Group Inc. (No. 658), W.R. Grace & Co. (No. 716), Legg Mason Inc. (No. 806), Under Armour Inc. (No. 877) and Ciena Corp. (No. 952).
