Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner (D-1) blasted a new push to build another bridge over the Potomac River to connect Loudoun County, Virginia to Montgomery County promising it will never be built.
"This is a zombie bridge and we need to put a stake in this,” Berliner said. “Our County has been opposed to this bridge forever and remains opposed to this bridge. It is a distraction.”
Next week the transportation planning board of the Council of Governments will consider whether or not fund a study on a building another crossing across the Potomac. Currently there is only one bridge, the American Legion Bridge, which connects the County to Virginia. The next closes bridge north on the Potomac, is at Point of Rocks, which connects Frederick County to Virginia.
Berliner said he opposes a second bridge in the County connecting to Virginia, because it would hurt the environment and promote sprawl. Berliner said that the proposed bridge would likely have to go through the County’s agricultural reserves.
