A grand jury indicted three men charged with the murders of two students from Northwest High School Thursday.
Jose Ovilson Canales-Yanez, 25, Edgar Garcia-Gaona, 24, and Roger Garcia, 19, were indicted on murder charges for the killings of Northwest High School seniors Shadi Adi Najjar and Artem Ziberov.
All three men were indicted on two counts of murder, three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, conspiracy to commit murder and armed robbery. Garcia-Gaona was indicted on an additional count of possession of a firearm with a felony conviction.
All three face life sentences if convicted.
Najjar and Ziberov were murdered June 5, the day before their high school graduation, after police found the two friends suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside a blue Honda Civic parked in the 8200 block of Gallery Court in Montgomery Village. Both victims died at the scene.
According to Montgomery County Police Chief Tom Manger, a witness told police that Canales-Yanez, Garcia-Gaona and Garcia murder Najjar in response to an alleged robbery. According to the witness, Najjar allegedly robbed Kara Yanez, the then-girlfriend and now-believed wife of Canales-Yanez, and that his murder was a revenge for the robbery. Police have not established a motive for Ziberov’s murder.
“The person stated that Roger Garcia, Edgar Garcia-Gaona and Jose Canales-Yanez committed the homicide in retaliation for Najjar’s robbery of Kara Yanez,” Manger said.
