A Montgomery County cross country team made a new state record and three county athletes finished their high school careers as state champions in the 5-kilometer run Saturday.

The Walter Johnson High School girls cross country team overcame the loss of two top runners (who were both injured before Saturday’s meet) to win their fifth consecutive state championship – a state record according to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association.

WJ head coach Tom Martin told the Sentinel that during a Friday night team meeting, he warned the healthy portion of his squad that they would have to run faster to win the race. But his team rose to the occasion, as the Lady Wildcats’ score of 83 points was sufficient to claim the state 4A crown.

Walter Johnson senior Janet Scott said she and her teammates each had to put in extra effort during their races to get the win.

“It’s been a lot of challenges, but it’s been a lot of us coming together and working really hard,” she said.

MoCo athletes win state titles in track and field at championship meets

BALTIMORE – Montgomery County Public Schools athletes earned multiple titles in track and field at the State Championship Meets at Morgan State University Friday.

Walter Johnson junior Abbey Green (10:46 minutes) beat her long-time distance rival Annapolis High School senior Maria Coffin (10:56 minutes) to become state champion.

It was her second track and field state title, her first for the outdoor season. Green said she and Coffin became friends during the last few years as they competed in track and field and in cross country.
Poolesville sophomore Nandini Satsangi came in first place in the 3A 3200m race (11:07). Satsangi held the second-place spot for most of the race, and then she led the final two laps. Her legs suddenly gave out a couple of feet from the finish line and she fell, but she won the race by finishing a few seconds ahead of Northern-Calvert junior Abby Sweeney (11:12).

GAITHERSBURG – Richard Montgomery senior Rohann Asfaw and Walter Johnson junior Abbey Green didn’t let the wind keep them from reclaiming the county cross country championship at Gaithersburg High School Saturday.

Green led the Wildcats to victory once again by breaking her race and course record, finishing in 17:46 minutes.

“I just tried to stay focused on what was ahead of me,” said Green, who ran alone the entire race.

Her only goal was to break last year’s time of 18:04.
