High School standouts participate in CKA All-Star Game

COLUMBIA – Nearly 30 of the best senior boys basketball players gathered at Howard Community College on Thursday to participate in the annual CKA Senior All Star game.

Eighteen schools, eight counties and two states were represented on the court as the students were divided into two teams: Team CKA and Team SAVE.

Even though Team SAVE led by nine points at the half, Team CKA rallied together and pulled off a win, 99-93.

After the game, St. Andrews guard Lorenzo Bascon and Gwynn Park guard Justin Faison were each named the Most Valuable Player of their respective team. Faison finished the game with 33 points while Bascon posted 20 points.

“It’s a great honor for me to be considered an all-star in high school,” said Faison. “It’s a blessing for me to win MVP and I’m very grateful for that.”

Mustamu leads Kennedy to victory over Poolesville, 77-33

SILVER SPRING – Kennedy senior guard Jonathan Mustamu scored a game-high 21 points Friday to lead the Cavaliers to a 77-33 victory over Poolesville on Senior Night.

“It’s always good to win especially on Senior Night,” Mustamu said afterward.

The Cavaliers have playoffs on their minds

SILVER SPRING – The Kennedy varsity boys’ basketball team is gearing up for the playoffs.

The second-seeded Cavaliers (18-3) are using their last few regular season games to iron out any issues and ride into the playoffs with as much momentum as possible.

Tuesday’s game against Clarksburg (10-11) was no different. The Cavaliers overcame a slow start to throttle the Coyotes, 90-67.

SILVER SPRING — The Kennedy Cavaliers boys’ basketball team (15-1) powered past by the Northwood Gladiators (2-14), 82-46, on the evening of Friday, Jan. 27 in a game filled with superb offensive and defensive production from the Cavaliers squad.

Kennedy stays undefeated after defeating Sherwood

SANDY SPRING – The Kennedy Cavaliers toppled the Sherwood Warriors, 76-68, in boys’ varsity basketball to stay undefeated, moving to eight games without a loss.

It was no easy feat, however: The Warriors never let down, and junior shooting guard Davis Long annoyed the Cavaliers as he bombed precise three-pointers all game long.

Boy cagers face challenges as hoop season begins

Seneca Valley came within a game of playing for a Maryland 3A state title last season but the Germantown public school has one of the county’s top returning players in senior guard Brandon Simpson.
A four-year varsity performer, Simpson averaged 13 points per game last season in leading the Screaming Eagles to a 3A state semifinal appearance.
Quince Orchard boasts perhaps the county’s top returning backcourt in seniors Johnny Fierstein and Matt Kelly who combined to average nearly 40 points per game last season.
