Magruder girls defeat Blake and move on in the playoffs

ROCKVILLE – The Magruder varsity girls basketball team had a rough practice a few days before opening their postseason Friday at home against Blake.

Colonels head coach Kashauna Cook said her team learned how to persevere during that difficult practice that involved running sprints for over an hour.

Cook’s team test couldn’t have come at a better time. Magruder’s newfound perseverance was tested against a third quarter Blake surge that saw the Bengals pull within one point.

However, the Colonels refused to be ‘one and done’ in the playoffs and held on to beat Blake 57-46.

Whitman girls stand ready to defend their 4A title

After capturing the 4A state championship last season, the Whitman girls basketball team enters the 2016-17 campaign with a target on its back.

The Vikings boast highly-touted senior Abby Meyers, who scored a game-high 21 points against Western to propel Whitman to the program’s first state title in more than two decades.
