Springbrook vs. MagruderSILVER SPRING — The Springbrook Blue Devils dominated a visiting Magruder Colonels football team full of surprises Friday night with a 31-21 comeback win.

The Blue Devils were trailing in the first quarter 14-0, but slowly built up a lead by taking advantage of the Colonels’ mistakes and a solid defense.

It was a frustrating night for Magruder as they tried to keep up with the momentum they established early in the game but failed to do so.

”It was just a completely different game the last three and a half quarters. We tried to get our guys and focus back, move the ball a little bit in the fourth quarter, but in the end we came up short,” said Magruder head coach Ray Fowle.

If the Colonels took full advantage of the Rams’ slim stable of players, then the scoreline could have been even greater. The Rams buckled down on defense and took to the flanks for their advances, quickly realizing that the Colonels’ defense was at its weakest on the sides.

“What did we dress, 19 people today? We don’t really have the bodies to play a full four quarters. But the guys we had played hard, and gave everything they got,” said Rams head coach Seth Kenton.

GAITHERSBURG—In a stunning sudden death upset, the Magruder Colonels varsity boys lacrosse team (8-7) scored a power play goal at the 1:20 mark of OT by senior attacker Jimmy Hasemann (5 goals) to seal a 2017 MPSSAA 3A/4A playoffs victory over the Northwest Jaguars (12-4), 10-9.

Hasemann explained the goal, saying, “We were a man up. So, we broke off from our regular set. We were going to run a man from X. We were just looking for feeds. We had a lot of cutters. I just cut down and it was there. He fed me…It was great.”

Scoring six goals during the game, Hasemann was the key player for this victorious Colonels squad.

Colonels head coach Greg Lyons said of Hasemann, “More of what we expect from him all year. A heck of a leader. A heck of a guy. Just as much as his on-field play, his off-field enthusiasm, always staying positive, keeping the guys into it. That’s something the guys always expect from him.”

Hasemann was overjoyed with the win, saying, “It feels great. It was back and forth the entire time. Finally, coming out with the ‘W’, amazing feeling. It was great.”

CLARKSBURG-The Magruder Colonels broke through a tough Clarksburg Coyote defense to get a 10-3 win Monday night, ultimately dominating the game with a relentless attack.

But the focal point of the Colonels’ attack was senior midfielder Jimmy Hassemann, who scored six points and led the Colonels to victory. Hassemann played the Coyote’s defense well, looping around the back and confusing the defense to score from very close range.

“I feel we did good on defense. From offense we need to take more shots, we need to pick it up,” said junior Coyotes goalkeeper Bryant Evans.

C.J. Cramma was Magruder’s best wrestler this past winter, but the Colonels’ junior lost more than he won against a visitor to his home gymnasium during a clinic on April Fools’ Day.

Competing at 113 pounds, Cramma won county and regional crowns and finished third at the Class 4A-3A state tournament to improve on the previous year’s placements of second, third and fourth in each.

But during a free clinic co-sponsored by the Marine Corps’ Sports Leadership Academy at Magruder on April 1, Cramma often partnered with Bethesda-Chevy Chase sophomore Eli Guttentag, who finished third at counties at 120 pounds a year after going 44-1 and winning county and regional titles before finishing third at states as a 106-pound freshman.

Colonels head coach Tara Vaglica said, “We’re very relaxed. … I think we’re one of the top teams in the county.”
