GAITHERSBURG – Mayor Jud Ashman and the City Council received a briefing from city staff Monday night about Gaithersburg’s priorities in the upcoming legislative session.

Monica Marquina, Gaithersburg’s Legislative Affairs manager, identified five top priorities for the city, the first of which was advocating for additional funding for school construction.

“The county’s population continues to grow at a rapid pace, and with this growth, our school construction needs grow, and with every year that passes, our schools are aging,” Marquina said, noting that MCPS welcomed 2800 new students this year.

“Without adequate school construction funding, MCPS will be forced into reliance on portable classrooms, while aging and unreliable facilities will become the norm.”
