Council passes funding for immigrant legal services

countysealThe Montgomery County Council on Tuesday unanimously approved $373,957 in funds for legal services for immigrants facing deportation, as the Council was set to approve its budget.

The vote was met with protest from both immigration and legal advocates, who had originally supported the measure, and by opponents who said they do not want the County to spend taxpayer dollars on legal services for immigrants.

McCarthy wants state to adopt RICO laws

Montgomery County State’s Attorney said the Maryland General Assembly needs to strengthen its racketeering laws in order to curb rise of gangs in the state.

At Tuesday’s meeting, County lobbyists to Annapolis told the County Council that the Maryland State’s Attorneys’ Association, which represents the leading prosecutors in all of the state’s jurisdictions, that it will push for a bill in Annapolis in the next legislative session to combat increased gang activity.
