B-CC defeat Sherwood 1-0 to advance to state final

B CC Barons vs. Sherwood WarriorsUPPER MARLBORO — The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons boys soccer team advanced to the Maryland state championship came on Saturday by defeating Sherwood Warriors 1-0 in a semifinal match held at Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School.

Following a scoreless first half, the Barons scored once in the second half and held on to secure their narrow victory.

“My boys played with a lot of heart today, discipline but everything else heart and love of each other,” said B-CC coach Gui Melendez. “That’s why we won, that simple.”

Kennedy Cavaliers at Walt Whitman High School Thursday evening in the boys varsity soccer first round playoffs, 2-0.

“I think we did pretty well today, we kept our composure but I still think we need to use our movements around the ball better so we can play into space,” said B-CC head coach Guillermo Melendez.

After a scoreless first half, the Barons found the net twice in the second half to progress to the second round of the playoffs.

Churchill beats WJ boys varsity soccer team 1-0

BETHESDA – The Winston Churchill Bulldogs defeated the Walter Johnson Wildcats boys varsity soccer team 1-0 Monday evening.

Both teams began the match searching for a goal, exchanging opportunities at each end of the field. The Bulldogs would open the scoring in the first half and remain organized to preserve their lead until the final whistle.

Rockville defeats Blake varsity boys soccer, 3-1

ROCKVILLE - The Rockville Rams defeated the James H. Blake Bengals boys varsity soccer team 3-1 at home Monday.

The Rams dominated possession during the first half and found the net before the break. The home team continued its momentum scoring two second-half goals before conceding a penalty to the Bengals.

“We did well out, first team did well, captains got the leadership, we could have scored more, but I’m happy just go with the win,” said Rockville coach Julio Zarate.

Churchill Bulldogs defeat Kennedy Cavaliers in soccer game, 4-1

Churchill Bulldogs logoPOTOMAC – The home team Churchill Bulldogs defeated the visiting Kennedy Cavaliers 4-1 in boys varsity soccer Friday evening.

The scoring began early in the first half as the Bulldogs, playing at home, found themselves with a 3-0 lead before halftime. The Cavaliers pushed forward early in the second but were able to find the net only once before a controversial penalty kick solidified the Bulldogs’ victory.

Churchill began by scoring after just 45 seconds. Junior winger Tamino Brown found himself unmarked to slot in a goal, leaving Kennedy goalkeeper Rexford Frimpong with no time to react.

Churchill's early momentum paid off as senior forward Darius Siahpoosh found the net twice in twelve minutes to triple the score.

"If you look at my goals, they're all from five yards away because my teammates are sending me up," Shiapush said. "I appreciate my teammates, always."

Churchill defeats Wootton in boys soccer, 2-0

POTOMAC – The Churchill Bulldogs defeated the Wootton Patriots 2-0 in a dominating performance at home in boys varsity soccer Thursday.

Controlling both halves, the Bulldogs maintained possession and speed over their opponents to score after just four minutes in the first half and again midway through the second half.

“I thought we did a lot of what we set out to do, possession, keep the ball wide, and I think that helped us control the game,” said Churchill head coach Arnold Tarzy. “The first goal was a bit lucky but it counts. The second was just brilliant, it was pretty emphatic,” he added.

Rockville Rams make a comeback in soccer game over RM Rockets, 3-2

PHOTO BY MARK POETKER  ROCKVILLE – The Rockville Rams completed a 3-2 comeback in boys varsity soccer Saturday afternoon to defeat the Richard Montgomery Rockets.

Dominating possession and opening the score in the first half, Rockville went behind but managed to score. The Rams' efforts paid off as they scored the only goal in the second half to win the match.

"We went down early but we had to keep working hard and I think coming back and holding out for 20-plus minutes says a lot about our team and our character," said senior midfielder Bryce Orsini.

Magruder one step closer to title

SILVER SPRING – The Magruder boys soccer team is one step closer to becoming the regional champion after beating Wheaton 1-0 Tuesday night.

“I think what led us to victory was playing fast and confident and getting the crosses,” said Nick Ratra, senior defender for Magruder.
