WJ Wildcats eke out 1-0 victory over RM Rockets late in the game

WJ Wildcats vs. RM RocketsROCKVILLE – The visiting Walter Johnson Wildcats secured a late victory 1-0 Thursday evening over the home team Richard Montgomery Rockets in boys varsity soccer.

After two evenly-matched halves, which saw the teams exchange attacks and goal opportunities, Walter Johnson scored a late goal three minutes before the final whistle.

“I thought we generated some good chances and had some difficulty finishing those chances but ultimately we didn’t give up anything,” said Walter Johnson head coach Hector Morales, Jr. “I was ready for the tie and it was nice that we were able to put one away late.”

Landon Bears triumphs over Bullis Bulldogs in boys soccer, 3-0

Playing under misty rainfall, the Bears dominated the first half after taking an early lead. Their momentum continued as they scored two second half goals to secure a convincing victory over the Bulldogs.

“The game was close for a long time,” said Landon coach Bill Reed. “Bullis came out hard and we matched each others’ energy.”

“I thought we really got it done, every one on the team loves each other so we’re always looking for each other,” said Landon senior midfielder Zach Johnson.

Wildcats soccer team grinds out narrow win at Wootton, 1-0

WJ Wildcats vs. Wootton PatriotsROCKVILLE – The Walter Johnson Wildcats squeezed out a narrow 1-0 victory against the Wootton Patriots in boys varsity soccer at Thomas Wootton High School Thursday evening.

Playing as the visiting team, the Wildcats took an early lead and held firm until the final whistle. The Patriots rallied in both halves with consistent pressure and created opportunities but were unable find the net.

“I felt we were able to put a good defensive game tonight,” said Walter Johnson coach Hector Morales Jr. “We were able to absorb the pressure well, keepers made good decisions coming off their line.”

Wootton Patriots overtake Paint Branch Panthers, 3-1

With all the goals coming in the second half, the Panthers took an early lead after the break. The Patriots then responded with three goals to secure the victory.

“We played soft without energy and commitment, and they had to get woken up by that goal in the second half,” said Wootton Coach Doug Schuessler. “Once they got slapped in the face, they started to play much more inspired.”

Whitman Vikings defeat Churchill Bulldogs, 2-1

The Vikings pressed forward early and took a two-goal lead before halftime. During the second half, the Bulldogs managed to narrow the score but were unable to level the match.

“I thought the first half was brilliant, we had numerous chances, we had the run of play,” said Whitman coach Dave Greene. “We did everything we had to do, we scored two goals.”

Rockville defeats Magruder varsity boys soccer, 3-1

ROCKVILLE – The Rockville Rams defeated the Colonel Zadok Magruder Colonels 3-1 in boys varsity soccer at Rockville High School Thursday evening.

With all the goals coming the second half, the Rams took the lead before Colonels equalized. The score remained even until Rockville responded with two goals in thirteen minutes.

"Every game we're getting a little better, playing more people, the new kids are getting adjusted to the system," said Rockville coach Julio Zarate. "We're hoping in the next two games, we're going to play our top," he added.

Northwest Jaguars make comeback to defeat the Richard Montgomery Rockets, 5-1

soccergoalROCKVILLE – The visiting Northwest Jaguars mounted a second-half comeback to defeat the home team Richard Montgomery Rockets 5-1 in boys varsity soccer Tuesday evening.

After a scoreless first half, the Rockets took the lead shortly after the break. The Jaguars then responded with five goals in 17 minutes to decisively win the match.

"It was kind of what we were waiting for all year," said Northwest coach Kert Mease. "I think that we moved the ball around as well as anybody," he added.

Churchill boys triple up Rockville in soccer action, 3-1

ROCKVILLE- The Churchill Bulldogs beat the Rockville Rams 3-1 in boys varsity soccer Tuesday night, a loss made tougher for the Rams by the mid-game concussion of their goalkeeper.

In the second half, a knee to the head knocked out junior goalkeeper Parker Shugars when he dove to save a shot knocked him out of the game, according to Rockville head coach Julio Zarate.

Shugars immediately fell and lay on the ground and medics later took him away in an ambulance.

According to Zarate, Shugars suffered a concussion and lost consciousness for a brief moment before regaining it.

“We’re hoping that he’s fine,” said Zarate.
