Fatal collision may bring additional charges to suspect who fled scene

Montgomery County Police are considering additional charges for a 24-year-old Bethesda man who was arrested for driving under the influence Saturday evening after the man fled on foot from an accident that left a 56-year-old man dead.

Police responded to a vehicular collision Saturday at 11:14 p.m. at the intersection of Rockville Pike and Congressional Lane in Rockville. Mark Steven Andrade, of the 7500 block of Democracy Blvd., was turning left onto Congressional Lane from northbound Rockville Pike when he collided with Ross Stanley Redler, of the 5900 block of Halpine Road. Redler was traveling southbound on Rockville Pike operating a 2014 Tao Tao scooter.


Pedestrian killed after police car collision

Policelights 1A 74-year-old Kensington man was killed Wednesday evening after being struck by an unmarked police cruiser as he attempted to cross Veirs Mill Road on a Sunra motor scooter.

Officer Robert Farmer, an eight-year veteran of Montgomery County Police, was on duty at the time of the collision. He has been placed on mandatory administrative leave while an investigation is conducted. 

The victim, Loreto Andal Canubas of Dewey Road, was entering the eastbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road at approximately 9:45 p.m. after crossing westbound Veirs Mill Road, coming from Monterrey Drive. 


Gaithersburg HS alum among missing sailors in Navy ship crash

Kevin Sayer Bushell, 26, who graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 2009, is one of the sailors missing after the USS John S. McCain, on which he was stationed, collided with a tanker ship early Monday morning.

Bushell is an electronics technician, second class, in the U.S. Navy.



Pedestrian struck by car near Rockville Metro

Rockville Police are investigating a pedestrian collision with a small compact car on southbound Rockville Pike next to the Rockville Metro Plaza at 7:15 PM this evening. Police are withholding the name of the pedestrian, a woman who has sustained life-threatening injuries, until her family can be notified. No word is available on her current condition. The name of the male driver who allegedly struck the pedestrian is also not available at this time. Read Thursday's edition of The Montgomery County Sentinel for further details.



Metro investigates death on Green Line and more problems

As the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority battles its continuing safety problems, Metro Transit Police Wednesday investigated the death of a person on the tracks near Suitland Metro Station on the Green Line in Prince George’s County Wednesday. 

Metro Transit Police said the unidentified man, who died between the Naylor Road and Suitland stations, may have intended to take his own life.

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority spokesperson Dan Stessel said Metro likely will not release the man’s identity if the death is confirmed to be a suicide.


Car crash claims bicyclist

A bicyclist from Silver Spring is dead following a collision with a car Sunday afternoon in Aspen Hill.

Oscar Mauricio Gutierrez Osorio, 31, rode his bike on Veirs Mill Road toward Turkey Branch Parkway when a 2003 Honda headed eastbound struck him, according to Montgomery County Police spokesperson Rick Goodale.

Police took Osorio and the driver, 42-year-old Williams Alfo Cordova Siguenza, to a hospital, where Osorio died from his injuries.


Woman dies in suspicious auto accident

Police say they are still investigating the cause after a second collision occurred less than a minute and a block away which included drugs and fleeing passengers.

71-year-old Victoria Hitchins died at the scene after her 2009 Camry struck a tree.

A mile away and about a minute later, a black SUV crashed at Randolph Road and New Hampshire Avenue. There were no casualties in the second accident, but police said they believe the two collisions were related and are still investigating the whereabouts of missing passengers who fled afterwards from the SUV.
