All the news that is unfit to print

20180411 160115News. Fake news. Spin. Propaganda. Left-leaning. Right-leaning. The legitimate press. The dishonest media.
So much to consider when simply trying to find out what is happening in the world. So, let me begin to help distinguish one from the other as we wade through the many possibilities.
Let's start with propaganda or, as it is more commonly referred to, FOX News. Why does FOX News fall into the category of propaganda you ask? Because the very definition of propaganda is “information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.”
That is exactly what FOX News does and is. It doesn't use facts to support its mission, which is to support the Trump presidency. It makes up its own facts or, as Kellyanne Conway put it, “alternative facts.” Labeling Special Counsel Robert Mueller as “corrupt” without providing any specifics of what he has done that has not been by the book and completely within the limits of the law is just one example.

Before you go too far . . .

Richard JeniThe late comedian Richard Jeni once said in reference to American politics if you’ve gone too far to the right or too far to the left then you’ve . . . gone too far.
And here we are in 2018. Our president says to the nation during a joint news conference how much he enjoys conflict and how happy his White House is. “Believe me everyone wants to work in the White House,” he said an hour before Gary Cohn became the latest to say “Not so fast.”

R.I.P GOP

MC DC Republican RebrandingWe are gathered here today to pay our respects to the dearly departed. They were dearly and they have departed. I’ve been here since the election and I haven’t seen the GOP move a muscle – with apologies to Richard Pryor.
The Grand Old Party, founded just prior to the Civil War and originally dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal had a healthy and robust childhood. Originally a party of progressives, the G.O.P. produced Abraham Lincoln – who guided us through the most divisive time in our history, and by sheer force of will – against cries of being a tyrant and a wannabe King – Lincoln kept the Union from disintegrating.

Republican voting for Clinton

To the editor;
I am among those Republicans who have re-registered as Unaffiliated.
I was a life-long Republican. I have never voted for a Democrat since first voting in 1972.. This year I will be voting for the Democratic candidates for President, the US Senate, and the US House of Representatives. The Republican nominee for President does not represent conservative, Republican values and is unfit to be President. Yet he has not been repudiated by either the national Republican party nor by most Republican candidates.

The home of the afraid

Donald Trump wave

It doesn’t take long, once outside of the United States, to understand the high degree of insulation we both enjoy and suffer from in our Republic.

In the four countries my wife and I have visited since we left on vacation last week, when the locals find we are Americans, a wonderful conversation usually commences,

“Is it as cool as your movies?” I’ve been asked by those who haven’t visited. We are usually asked how large our country is and do we travel around it.

I remark how in five hours I can visit five countries in Europe, but I can actually drive for 10 hours in Texas and never leave the state.

That usually gets their attention.

Timeout for Life

Boy did I take a beating this week – pun intended.

Not physically, but by several of my so-called liberal friends who told me I’d sold my soul to the devil or worse, to the GOP or perhaps Donald Trump, because I suggested corporal punishment – in some cases – is warranted by parents.

When browbeaten by a dozen or more of these do-gooders, my first reaction was, “Hey, it wasn’t me. It was my evil twin Skippy.”

Kind of like John Lennon saying, “Here’s another clue for you all. The Walrus was Paul.”

Nobody believes it and it isn’t true anyway.
