State website offers ability to compare local hospital costs

Wear The CostConsumers can compare hospitals’ prices for four common procedures at a new website, wearthecost.org, started Oct. 19 by the Maryland Health Care Commission.

The site, named for “Wear the Cost” T-shirts urging consumers to check on health cost comparisons, has “all-in costs” for knee and hip replacements, baby deliveries, and hysterectomies. MHCC executive director Ben Steffen told the Sentinel that the site will add costs on many other medical procedures, some hospital-based and some not, over the next several years.

“There is price variation between hospitals in Maryland,” Steffen said. “We think consumers should be aware of that.”

Silver Spring Transit Center finally on the move

silver spring transit centerSILVER SPRING – Five years behind schedule and about $50 million over budget, the Paul Sarbanes Transit Center at the Silver Spring metro station finally seems to be on track.

This week crews are preparing the surface of the transit center for the final step of remediation, the latex-modified concrete (LMC) overlay for the middle tier of the structure, according to Department of General Services (DGS) Director David Dise.

County considers a ban on Styrofoam

styrofoam containerROCKVILLE- On Sept. 9, County Councilmembers Hans Riemer (D-At Large) and George Leventhal (D-At Large) proposed a county-wide ban on the use of Styrofoam containers, plastic foam food service products by food service businesses, the sale of plastic foam loose fill packaging (packing peanuts) and bulk plastic foam food service products (bulk foam cups and plates).
