Pending hospital closure causes concern for residents of Takoma Park

TAKOMA PARK — City officials were caught off guard after Washington Adventist Hospital officials relayed their intention on Tuesday, to potentially close critical medical facilities in the city. 

“The City Council is stunned and dismayed to hear of this decision,” said Takoma Park Mayor Kate Stewart. “Losing the behavioral health facility is a great concern because of its use for the police.” 

The hospital’s vice president Robert Jepson informed Stewart they intend to seek permission from the state to close the psychiatric, inpatient behavioral health, and inpatient rehabilitation units once the hospital moves to a newly-planned 48-acre site in White Oak, city manager Suzanne Ludlow said.


Alcohol-related visits to ERs are on the rise

emergency roomAmericans are making more visits to hospital emergency rooms with alcohol-related causes, a new study released by the National Institutes of Health found.

“In just nine years, the number of people transported to the [emergency room] annually for medical emergencies caused or exacerbated by alcohol increased from about 3 million to 5 million,” said George F. Koob, Ph.D., Director of NIH’s National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. “These findings are indicative of the detrimental effects that acute and chronic alcohol misuse have on public health, and the significant burden they place on our healthcare system.”


New hospital to open in Germantown

stethoscopeGERMANTOWN – For the first time in 35 years, a new state-of-the-art hospital is opening in Montgomery County.

The new Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, located on the Montgomery County Community College Germantown campus, will open its doors Oct. 1.
