Raskin invokes high school’s namesake at Einstein graduation

KENSINGTON — U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin (8th District) invoked the character and achievements of Albert Einstein as he addressed the Albert Einstein High School Class of 2018 during its graduation Tuesday afternoon.

Einstein stood strong against Nazism and fascism. He was a scientific genius who valued imagination over knowledge and an immigrant who in 1933 left the violence and hatred Adolph Hitler was spewing and began life in America, Raskin told the students.

School graduation rates vary across the County

MCPS logoMontgomery County public schools officials brag about its high school graduation rates that are higher than the state average, but that is only partially true, according to a new state report posted online last month. 

MCPS officials boasted that the county high school graduation rate for the adjusted 4-year cohort was 89.5 percent, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points from 2016, but which was higher than the state average. 

However, nine of Montgomery County's 25 high schools' graduation rates dipped below the state graduation rate, which officials measure in terms of the “four-year cohort.”

PTSA members question superintendent

BETHESDA – Executive members of a local parent teacher student association voted unanimously to request clarification of school board policy for Montgomery County Public Schools and to support the school principal’s upholding of a school rule about behavior at the prom.

Members of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Parent Teacher and Student Association said they were concerned about student safety and about what they perceived to be inconsistent responses to rules of individual high schools after MCPS Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers overruled Principal Donna Redmond Jones’ recent decision to forbid six students from attending graduation.

“Please clarify your policy and how it is implemented, in order to uphold the authority of Principals and ensure impartiality and consistency throughout all schools in the County,” members said in the petition to Bowers.

CLARKSBURG – Brooke Asbury woke up 6:30 a.m. Wednesday to the sound of her mother entering her bedroom.

Robin Asbury gained her composure and told her teenage daughter what she first heard from her son and then from a friend.

“You lost three of your friends last night,” Robin told Brooke.

MCPS students lack space for graduation ceremonies

graduation capsMontgomery County Public School seniors will graduate in outdoor venues again this school year as plans for the Shady Grove Arena continue to be on hold.

Approximately 10,000 students graduate from the 25 MCPS high schools each year, said Montgomery County Board of Education Vice President Pat O’Neill, but there is not a venue that can accommodate them.
