Disturbing the Snow of Your Thoughts

trumpnmeCurious how old habits stay with you.
When I was a young boy and it snowed I loathed walking into either the front or backyard disturbing the fresh powder. It looked too pristine, too gentle and way too cool.
I wanted to preserve the moment – or the myth of the “perfect snow day”.

Rex Tillerson actually got this one right

MC DC NRAs Solution to EverythingAdmittedly, I was not a fan of naming the head of Exxon-Mobil as the head of the State Department, but I must give credit where credit is due. Rex Tillerson was exactly right when he described the current occupant of the Oval Office as a moron. The president proves the accuracy of that assessment on an almost daily, if not hourly, basis but no example is better than his current cure-all for eliminating gun massacres in schools: arming teachers!
Now, to be quite honest, if I were a teacher in a classroom and there was a shooter with an assault rifle in the hallway firing at will, I would definitely wish I had in my possession a firearm. That goes without saying.
However, simply adding the arming of teachers, as some eight states currently allow, into the broader discussion is not what makes Trump a moron. It is his sincere belief that he just came up with the solution that seemed to have eluded everyone else other than the NRA. The expression on his face when he shared this brainstorm with the survivors of school gun violence is priceless.
The fact that he is incapable of assessing the full range of ramifications of his, in his mind, brilliant solution is truly frightening coming from a sitting president. Not realizing the complexity of the issue and the need to implement a broad range of actions, including fewer guns, to address this epidemic of mass shootings is what truly makes him so unfit for the office he now holds.

Racists are simply and merely lazy

Charottlesville 2Racists are lazy.
There is no way around that realization. It takes some effort to view people as individuals and then weigh the good points against the bad points to make a determination about the quality of each individual. It is far easier to paint groups of people with a broad brush and take the individual assessment out of the equation. It is much easier to accept or condemn them as a group basing the decision on factors such as race or religion, or, for that matter, any of a host of other considerations such as income, country of birth or ancestry, level of education or any of a myriad of other subjective factors.
When it comes to race, that is a real easy one; it's as easy as distinguishing black, maybe brown, from white, no research necessary.

Welcome to a brand new scary game

DD At Klan Rally in MarylandDaryl Davis with a member of the Ku Klux Klan. COURTESY PHOTO  The country that created and popularized such seasonal sports games as football, baseball, and basketball, has now created an all-season game, impervious to any type of weather. Its participants are obsessed with playing it seven days per week and twenty-four hours per day. It's called The Blame Game.
For the last eight years, anything and everything that was wrong in our country or in our own personal lives was blamed on President Obama. It became so ridiculous that if someone stepped of the sidewalk the wrong way and twisted their ankle, they blamed Obama.
Today, while some are still playing the old Obama version, others have moved on to the new Trump version. Ironically, the Donald himself prefers to play the old version which expired on January 20th of this year, and he does so every time he has the opportunity. In fact, it's become addictive for him.
What is sad is that the United States, once a very proactive country, leading the world has become complacent and reactive in taking steps to find solutions rather than cast aspersions. Our citizens' reaction has been to blame the country's leaders. There are those who say race relations in America are the worst they've seen and eight years of President Barack Obama is to blame. Others claim that the blame for a rise in extremist hate groups and the violent and deadly event which recently took place in Charlottesville, Va., lies squarely on the shoulders of President Donald Trump.

Rebuilding Dem-Labor alliance in Trump world

Damon silversDamon Silvers of the AFL-CIO.     COURTESY PHOTO  An hour does not likely go by that someone, especially a Democrat, doesn't wonder: “How could this have happened? How could this country have placed someone as ill-prepared, unfit and self-serving as Donald J. Trump in the White House?” I attended a presentation by Damon Silvers of the AFL-CIO on this very topic. Mr. Silvers attempted to explain not just what went wrong but what needs to be done to prevent a similar disaster from recurring in the future.

Dreaming the impeachable dream

Don Quixote tilting at windmillsIn 1868 the House of Representatives resolved to adopt articles of impeachment against President Andrew Johnson because, it was contended, the president violated the Tenure of Office Act. This Act required Senate approval for removing certain office holders.
It was the contention of the House that the president violated this Act when he removed Edwin McMasters Stanton, the Secretary of War, from office and replaced him with Lorenzo Thomas.
The Tenure of Office Act, by the way, was only in effect from 1667 to 1887.
Did this violation by President Johnson truly warrant impeachment or was adopting articles of impeachment purely a political act by Congress? Your guess is as good as mime regarding this impeachment hearing, but of note President Johnson was not convicted by the Senate.

Maybe it's merely the longest 100 days - yet

trump thumbs up low resMore than 100 days or so into this administration and I must admit I have not grown tired of winning. I am just waiting for it to begin unless you consider Trump's firing the individual ultimately responsible for the F.B.I. investigation into his administration regarding the Russian connection a win. Well, I guess he considers that a win, at least for his own self-interest, for the time being. Whatever did happen to Boris Epstyn?

Post hoc ergo propter hoc

20170503 100417President Donald Trump. Saying the name is a joke and an insult all at the same time. Not since Richard Milhous Nixon has the nation faced a more direct and vile threat to its existence.
Of Nixon, upon his passing, Hunter S. Thompson opined, “He was the real thing -- a political monster straight out of Grendel and a very dangerous enemy. He could shake your hand and stab you in the back at the same time. He lied to his friends and betrayed the trust of his family.”
It isn’t a stretch to imagine this as a description of President Donald Trump.
