Ricin Found in Georgetown Dorm Room

GWUniversityWASHINGTON, D.C-A Georgetown University student was ordered to in-patient psychiatric care after his lawyers argued he made ricin in an attempt to poison himself.
Daniel Milzman, 19, was arrested after he told his resident advisor he used the internet to learn how to create 123 mg. of the deadly chemical. Federal prosecutors said Milzman first heard about the chemical from the TV show Breaking Bad, in which the main character begins making methamphetamine in his home to pay for cancer treatment and becomes wealthy. On TV, making deadly chemicals makes one a cult hero. In real life, making deadly chemicals in a dorm room is grounds of arrest with up to ten years in federal prison.
Milzman is a 2013 graduate of Whitman High School. He was a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist in high school and a member of the quiz bowl team. At Georgetown, he was a member of the Secular Student Alliance at Georgetown and the co-founder of the school’s quiz bowl team. He also was a philanthropist, having raised money for Leukemia research.
“Milzman used his considerable intelligence and skills to produce ricin, a biological toxin. The toxin he produced was of sufficient strength and concentration to be deadly if injected or inhaled. Moreover, there is evidence indicating that his purpose in creating this poison was to use this against another person,” said Ronald Macer of the U.S. Attorney’s office.
