Broad Acres Elementary renamed in honor of former principal

Jody LeleckROCKVILLE -The Board of Education unanimously renamed Broad Acres Elementary School last night in honor of JoAnn Leleck, a former principal of the school who passed away in 2012. The vote was met with a standing ovation from those in attendance.


Bethesda-based company wins more than $309 million in lawsuit

gavel2The family of one of the inventors of the defibrillator won more than $309 million in a lawsuit over patent licenses in Montgomery County Circuit Court on Sept. 18.  Both parties can still appeal the judgment to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.

A trial by jury before Circuit Court Judge Ronald Rubin granted accrued royalties and damages to Bethesda-based Mirowski Family Ventures, LLC, (MFV) who sued Boston Scientific and its subsidiaries over patent licenses for the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and methods of using it.


Berliner leads Exelon merger probe

1198-1-2469bCounty Councilmember Roger Berliner has spearheaded an effort to embed utility reforms in the conditions of the proposed Pepco-Exelon merger.

On Sept. 19 the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) accepted the petition to intervene from Berliner’s Coalition for Utility Reform, which includes elected officials, environmental organizations and think tanks. Pepco, or the Potomac Electric Power Company, announced the proposed merger with Chicago-based Exelon on April 30 and filed with the Maryland PSC on Aug. 19.
