A Montgomery County firefighter died last week after being found unconscious at the Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Department, Fire Station 15.
MCFRS Spokesperson Pete Piringer said Charles “Rick” Gentilcore, 52, sat down and was later found unresponsive in a chair at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 7 according to witnesses.
Immediate medical treatment was initiated. Gentilcore was then transported in critical condition to Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring and died later that day.
No cause of death has been established and Gentilcore was not known to have any medical conditions.
Piringer said all firefighters are required to undergo annual medical exams. No abnormalities were detected and Gentilcore did not complain of medical issues.
Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott E. Goldstein asks the community, "Please keep the Gentilcore family and the entire MCFRS family in your thoughts and prayers as we work through this difficult time."
Hundreds gathered for the funeral Wednesday, 1 p.m. at Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg and his remains will be interred at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring.
Gentilcore was a 23-year veteran and Bowie resident. He began as a volunteer in 1994 and became a career firefighter in 2005. He began his career in Burtonsville and was assigned to several stations across the county before being transferred back to Burtonsville. He leaves behind a wife, son and extended family.
