COLLEGE PARK – Maryland wide receiver Stefon Diggs picked up where he left off last season.

The former Good Counsel standout shined for the White team Friday night in Maryland’s annual spring football game at Byrd Stadium.

Although the Red and White teams played to a 13-13 tie, Diggs showed the 8,200 spectators in attendance the skills that made him a high-school All-American and one of the top freshmen in the Atlantic Coast Conference last season.

“He is better this spring,” said Maryland head coach Randy Edsall. “He is more focused, not to say that he wasn’t before. He really wants to be better. He doesn’t want to stay the same, he doesn’t want to regress. He really understands the effort that has to go into being a good player.”

Diggs, who finished the game with eight receptions for 159 yards including a 51-yard touchdown pass from Ricardo Young, emerged as one of the ACC’s top playmakers last fall and should have an impact again this season.

“We feel comfortable because we know what we’re doing,” said Diggs, the runner-up for the league’s rookie of the year award last season. “Last year, we knew what we were doing but we weren’t very comfortable, but this year we’ve got a year under our belt, so now we know how the plays work, how we work off other guys and what we can bring to the table.”

Diggs, however, wasn’t the only local product who shined in Friday’s scrimmage. Former Northwest standout Marcus Whitfield registered three sacks on defense and Zach Dancel, Diggs’s former high school teammate, recorded an interception for the Red team to set up Brad Craddock’s game-tying 40-yard field goal. Good Counsel graduate Mike Madaras was also part of the starting unit on the offensive line.

“I had an OK game,” said Diggs. “Ricardo played big, O-line blocked well and we just played as a collective unit on both sides of the ball.”
