LANDOVER – The Washington Redskins will not be going to the Super Bowl this year.

After trailing by two touchdowns in the first quarter of their NFC wild card playoff game, the Seattle Seahawks rallied Sunday to earn a 24-14 victory over the Redskins before 84,325 spectators at FedEx Field.

The game marked a battle of first-year NFL quarterbacks and Rookie of the Year candidates Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson.

Wilson finished 15-of-26 for 187 yards and a touchdown while Griffin suffered a right knee injury that hindered his performance; he finished 10-of-19 for 84 yards and two touchdowns before he was replaced by Kirk Cousins late in the fourth quarter.

Washington scored on their first two possessions of the game when Griffin threw a pair of four-yard touchdowns to two different receivers.

Griffin connected with running back Evan Roster for the game’s first score then found tight end Logan Paulsen in the end zone to cap an eleven-play, 54-yard scoring drive late in the first quarter.

However, Seattle scored 24 unanswered points to snap Washington’s winning streak at seven games. The Redskins finished with a 10-7 record and captured the NFC East division title after a 3-6 start.

“I told the players after the game that not too many football teams can be 3-6 and have the type of character to play how they did in the last half of the season,” said Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan. “It’s really a compliment to the guys in that locker room, really a compliment to the fans out there to support us the way they did – really got our team energized throughout the second half of the season. It was a fun run.”
