Shoppers are flocking to their local Magruder’s grocery store to take advantage of 50 percent sales in light of the chain’s announcement of negotiations to sell its remaining four stores.

Gary Butnick, vice president of Magruder’s Supermarkets, made the announcement in a letter and said the store on Connecticut Avenue has already been sold but will keep the Magruder’s name. The remaining stores are located in Gaithersburg, Rockville, Alexandria, Va., and Vienna, Va.

The Magruder’s chain opened in 1875 and was sold 46 years ago to a local family who has managed the chain ever since. Butnick did not name the buyers in his statement.

“Although this is a difficult decision, it has been a pleasure and a privilege to have been an important part of Washington history dating from the days of President Ulysses S. Grant to President Obama and 26 presidents in between,” Butnick said in the statement. “However, now is the right time for our family to move on.”

Charles Garrett, a Rockville resident, said he goes to the Rockville store every day because of its convenience since he works at the nearby Comcast office. Despite his disappointment in the sale of the store, he decided to go do some grocery shopping once he found out about the sale Wednesday.

“That’s why I went shopping here today,” Garrett said. “My tab was $183, and I paid $90. (The sale) is a big minus for this neighborhood and the county. For now, I’m going to capitalize as much as I can.”

Garrett said his decision to continue shopping at the location once a new tenant takes over will depend on the pricing.

Jud Ashman, a Gaithersburg city councilmember, said he and his family have shopped at the Gaithersburg store for many years.
