GAITHERSBURG – The City Council voted unanimously to confirm the selection of Yvette Monroe as its newest member Monday Night.
Monroe, recipient of Gaithersburg’s Distinguished Citizen Award last year and Chair of the city’s Education and Enrichment Committee, was chosen from a dozen applicants and five finalists to serve the balance of Council Member Henry F. Marraffa Jr.’s final term. Marraffa died on Oct. 18, and his term expires in November. Monroe has not yet announced whether she will seek a full term in the fall. She was scheduled to be formally sworn in at City Hall Wednesday night.
The council inducted County Council member Sidney A. Katz (D-3) into Gaithersburg’s Hall of Mayors. Katz, a Gaithersburg native and graduate of Gaithersburg High school, served on the City Council from 1978 to 1998, when he was appointed mayor following the death of Mayor W. Edward Bohrer. He served as Mayor until his election to the County Council in 2014. At Monday night’s meeting, a portrait of Katz was unveiled, which will hang with portraits of other past city mayors in the hallway leading to the Council Chambers.
