Rutgers sophomore guard and Silver Spring native Jerome Seagears last week announced through his twitter account that he was transferring from the New Jersey school to Southeastern Conference member Auburn University.

“I Will Be Attending Auburn University To Finish My Student Athletic Career!!! War Eagle” tweeted Seagears.

The Montgomery County product leaves Rutgers in the wake of the Mike Rice videotape scandal and could get an NCAA waiver to play next season.

During his freshman campaign, Seagears averaged 7.7 points per game and 2.5 assists. However, last season the 6-foot-1 guard struggled through a slump, finishing the campaign with averages of 6.5 points and 2.6 assists per game.

He began his high school career in Montgomery County at Northwood where he spent his sophomore campaign. He later transferred to B-CC where he emerged as one of the county’s top point guards, averaging 15.5 points per game as a junior.

“He was a leader on the court,” recalled former Seneca Valley head coach Tom Sheahin. “He could handle the ball and score.”

Sheahin noted that Seagears was a strong player with a good outside shot. “He could definitely finish around the basket,” said Sheahin. “He just played much bigger than what he is size-wise.”

Seagears left B-CC and finished his high school career at Flora MacDonald Academy in North Carolina where he averaged 32 points, 6.5 rebounds and nine assists during the 2010-2011 campaign.
