BETHESDA – Wootton overcame an early deficit Monday and scored 24 unanswered points en route to a 24-14 road victory over B-CC at Guckeyson Memorial Stadium.
“One of the things we always preach,” said Wootton head coach Tyree Spinner, “it’s not how you start it’s how you finish so they bounced back and took the lead and came out with the W.”
The Patriots (2-0) were led by talented junior quarterback Sam Ellis along with sophomore Trevon Diggs and senior Jibri Woods who helped the team earn its second win.
Meanwhile, B-CC (1-1) was seeking revenge following last year’s 20-point loss to the Patriots.
Ellis completed 27-of-38 passes for 346 yards including a touchdown. He also ran for a score and threw an interception.
The signal-caller completed passes to six different receivers including Diggs who finished with 11 receptions for 158 yards.
Early in the fourth quarter, a B-CC scoring drive was halted by a Diggs interception deep in Wootton territory.
“Trevon Diggs is Trevon Diggs,” said Spinner. “There’s nothing else you can really say. He’s an unbelievable talent. I’m lucky to have him on my team.”
With less than a minute remaining in the first quarter, B-CC jumped out to a 7-0 lead when quarterback Jack Hanifee connected with Steven Kelly who got behind the Wootton secondary and hauled in the pass and raced 54 yards for the score.
However, Wootton responded on the ensuing possession when Ellis found Diggs in the end zone for the score. Diggs outjumped his defender for a 26-yard touchdown to even the score at seven apiece.
Later in the second quarter, Wootton running back Bryan Castillo scored from two yards out with 5:03 remaining to give the Patriots a 14-7 advantage.
Ellis led Wootton downfield in the third period, diving into the end zone for five yards out to cap a nine-play, 74-yard drive that gave the Patriots a 24-7 lead with 3:10 left.
“Sam Ellis is just an exceptional leader,” said Spinner. “He has all the intangibles as far as technique and all that. What a lot of people don’t know is his leadership is genuine. He cares and he’s relentless when it comes to detail. His leadership takes us a long way, it gets us over the hump whenever we’re struggling.”
