Locals light up the Cap Classic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Maret School senior forward Luka Garza’s all-time favorite basketball player is LeBron James.

It was fitting, then, that the last time the Verizon Center hosted the Capital Classic, James was on the court.

Fourteen years later, Garza stepped onto the same court to participate in the 44th annual All-American game along with some of the country’s best high school players.

Students from nine different states, including Florida and Minnesota, traveled to the nation’s capital Saturday to play in a game that has proved to be a stepping stone for a number of decorated NBA players.

High School standouts participate in CKA All-Star Game

COLUMBIA – Nearly 30 of the best senior boys basketball players gathered at Howard Community College on Thursday to participate in the annual CKA Senior All Star game.

Eighteen schools, eight counties and two states were represented on the court as the students were divided into two teams: Team CKA and Team SAVE.

Even though Team SAVE led by nine points at the half, Team CKA rallied together and pulled off a win, 99-93.

After the game, St. Andrews guard Lorenzo Bascon and Gwynn Park guard Justin Faison were each named the Most Valuable Player of their respective team. Faison finished the game with 33 points while Bascon posted 20 points.

“It’s a great honor for me to be considered an all-star in high school,” said Faison. “It’s a blessing for me to win MVP and I’m very grateful for that.”

Best boys lacrosse players in the county line up for all star game

BETHESDA – Some of the best varsity boys lacrosse players in Montgomery County gathered at Walter Johnson High School Thursday for the annual Senior Showcase game.

Nearly 50 students from 20 local high schools participated in the all-star bout. Players wore their school colors on their helmets and were divided into Team Blue or Team White.

The boys in blue won 13-8 in a high action game where players rotated on and off the bench to give everyone a chance to participate.

Montgomery County players represent in Roundball Classic

HAGERSTOWN – More than 350 senior high school basketball players represented 150 public and private schools Saturday and Sunday at the 11th annual Roundball Classic at North Hagerstown High School’s Hub Arena. 

The all-star event showcased students from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and D.C. in a series of matchups. Over the years, multiple Classic alumni have extended their basketball career to the college level. Several players have gone on to perform at the professional level.

County All-Star game last hurrah

ROCKVILLE – Springbrook High School senior basketball standout Marcus Boyd had a blast competing in the Montgomery County All-Star Game last week at Montgomery College.

Boyd, a 6-foot-7 forward/center, was among six players who scored in double figures to lead the visitors to a 128-118 victory over the home team.

Four county high school basketball players find themselves in Cap Classic

basketballhoopsFour Montgomery County boys’ basketball standouts have been selected to participate in the 42nd annual Capital Classic High School All-Star Game Friday in the nation’s capital.

Richard Montgomery senior Nick Jackson is among a group of four county student-athletes that will suit up in the Capital Classic preliminary game at Catholic University’s DuFour Center in Washington, D.C.
