BEL AIR - Coming off a road loss to Bullis last week the Avalon Black Knights looked to travel to Bel Air to heal their wounds.

But John Carroll would have none of it and dealt the Black Knights their second straight loss, 30-14.

Avalon came out strong with a 52-yard run from the line of scrimmage by running back Jacquille Veii to give the Black Knights an early 6-0 lead.

Then John Carroll reeled off 30 straight points before Rachid Ibrahim would find the end zone late in the game to give the Black Knights their second score. A two-point conversion run by quarterback Wyatt Karem gave the Black Knights their final two points.

The game was marred by a myriad of penalties, rivaling only the notorious NFL Monday Night Football game between the Packers and the Seahawks for the number of penalties and their controversy.

Avalon was penalized for 155 yards, and had three touchdowns called back. John Carroll was penalized eight times for 92 yards.

The back breaker for Avalon came on a 65-yard interception by Veii that was called back for a block in the back 20 yards behind the ball carrier.

“We played sloppy,” head coach Tad Shields said. “We have a quality football team and we have to correct our mistakes.” Shields said Avalon made too many mental errors to pin the game on the refs.

“We had some calls go against us this game, but we made tons of mistakes. This is not the Avalon football we were trying to go back to.”

Veii had 14 carries for 116 yards and a score, and Rachid Ibrahim had 16 for 78 yards and a score. Adam McClean carried the ball three times for 15 yards while Karem had three carries for six yards, scored an extra point and was seven for 11 passing for 31 yards and one interception. Next week Avalon will take on conference rival Perry Street Prep, who currently leads the conference with a 4-1 record, 4-0 in conference.
