LANDOVER – DeMatha snapped its four-game losing streak against conference rival Good Counsel in the Stags’ 21-0 victory Friday over the Falcons at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex.

The teams last met in the 2012 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship game in November with Good Counsel earning a 26-14 win over DeMatha but the Stags avenged that loss in convincing fashion.

“It’s big for the program,” said DeMatha head coach Elijah Brooks. “Everyone knew that Good Counsel, they had our number for the last couple years. For us to come out and have a convincing win like that was good.”

DeMatha, the top-ranked team in the state, and Good Counsel, the four-time reigning WCAC champion, have combined for the last ten league titles.

In the first quarter, DeMatha quarterback John Lovett connected with Lorenzo Harrison for a nine-yard score to give the Stags a 7-0 advantage. The DeMatha defense came up big in the third period when Cameron Phillips returned an interception 98 yards for a touchdown.

Wisconsin-bound running back Taiwan Deal rushed for a game-high 129 yards on 12 carries and scored on a 95-yard run in the fourth quarter.

“Taiwan Deal at running back has been leading the way offensively all year,” said Brooks.

Meanwhile, Good Counsel (3-3) dropped its second straight league game after a 3-1 start. However, DeMatha (5-1) extended its winning streak to three games after suffering a 42-14 loss to St. Joseph’s (N.J.) in the third game of the season.

DeMatha, who registered its first shutout this season, gave Good Counsel its first shutout loss since the 2000 campaign.

“Our entire defense from the secondary to the linebackers and the d-line, they just had a very impressive performance,” said Brooks.
