Bladensburg police officers fatally shot a knife-brandishing woman Friday night in an apartment building.

Around 10:30 p.m. Friday, Bladensburg police officers were called to the 4200 block of 53rd Avenue for a report of a woman wielding a knife in the hallway of an apartment building.

When three officers knocked on Tonya Michelle Buggs’ apartment door, the 43-year-old Bladensburg woman opened it and lunged at the officers with a knife. All three officers shot at her, according to Bladensburg Police spokesperson Sgt. Tracy D. Stone.

“We are not sure why Buggs committed this act; this will be part of our investigation,” Stone said.

The three officers are assigned to patrol, and they have been placed on administrative leave with pay, Stone said.

Prince George’s County Police Department is conducting the investigation of this case.
