A nine-year veteran of the Bladensburg Police Department was killed Saturday in a motor vehicle accident on Route 100 westbound at Edwin Raynor Boulevard in Anne Arundel County.
Officer Brian Johnson was off duty in his marked police cruiser traveling eastbound on Route 100 near Catherine Avenue just after 9 a.m. Saturday, when his car crossed the median and struck another car traveling in the opposite direction.
Firefighters and paramedics from Anne Arundel County Fire Department responded to the incident. When they arrived on the scene, Johnson was trapped in his cruiser and had to be extricated, according to Anne Arundel County fire officials.
Johnson was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police officials said.
Investigators initially believed Johnson may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the accident, but an autopsy conducted by the chief medical examiner indicated Johnson shot himself, according to Anne Arundel County police officials.
Police said the other driver was treated and released at the scene.
Johnson was also a life member of the Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Department, where he held the rank of lieutenant.
“He will be missed,” said Volunteer Fire Capt. Vic Pickel of the Bladensburg VFD.
Pickel called Johnson a “great guy, a great firefighter.”
“You can count on him doing a good job at (any) incident he was at," Pickel said. "He was a team leader.”
