A 20-year-old Bryans Road was indicted in connection to the death of a Central High School student who was fatally shot while walking to school.
The morning of Sept. 11, 18-year-old Marckel Ross was walking in the 6100 block of Central Avenue in Capitol Heights when he was mugged, said Police Chief Mark Magaw.
During the robbery attempt, Ross was shot and killed for unknown reasons, Magaw said.
According to Maj. Michael Straughan, commander of Prince George’s County Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division, Bennett was arrested last fall for a street robbery. The gun used in the robbery matched the one used to kill Marckel. Investigators finally had enough evidence to charge Bennett with the murder of Marckel.
“The message here is no matter how long it takes us, we will find you, we will bring you to justice and we will hold you accountable,” Magaw said.
Police officials said Bennett may also be responsible for a rash of muggings and a shooting last May.
Marckel was one of six teens in Prince George’s County killed this school year.
On Aug. 22, Amber Stanley, a 17-year-old honors student at Flowers High School, was shot and killed as she was sleeping in her bedroom in the 100 block of Chartsey Street in Largo. Police still have not made an arrest in the case.
On Aug. 25, 14-year-old Eliezer B. Reyes who attended Foundations School, an independent special education school in Largo for students with emotional disabilities, was gunned down as he was standing outside of a house in the 2200 block of Sheridan Street in Lewisdale. Officials were looking into the possibility that the shooting was gang related. Two men were arrested in connection with Reyes’ death.
On Jan. 19, Marcus Jones, a student at Suitland High School, was shot and killed as he was leaving a birthday party in Fort Washington . Police arrested Akil Darnell Ings, 17, and Kquantae Markies Fisher, 19 for the homicide.
On Feb. 18, Charles Walker Jr., a freshman at Suitland High School, was walking to a bus stop in the 4000 block of 28th Street in Hillcrest Heights when five males in a van attempted to rob him. As he turned to flee the area, he was shot and killed. All five males have been arrested and charged with the shooting.
On Feb. 19, two teenage males were shot and killed in a parking lot in the 3700 block of Donnell Drive in Forestville. The victims were Aaron Kidd, 18, a freshman at Suitland High School, and 18-year-old Andre Shuford, of Forestville. No arrests have been made in this case.
