A 19-year-old Suitland male is Prince George’s County’s first homicide victim this year.

The homicide occurred just after 2 p.m. Jan. 5 in the 2000 block of Brooks Drive at Oakcrest Towers in District Heights.

Patrol officers from Prince George’s County Police Department’s District IV station in Oxon Hill responded to the parking lot of the apartment complex to check of the welfare of an unresponsive male. Upon arrival, they located Darryl Nicholas McCoy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. McCoy was pronounced dead on the scene.

Homicide detectives are currently working to identify a suspect or suspects and a motive in this case.

In the first five days of January 2011, six homicides occurred in the county.

The first homicide of the year occurred just after 10: 30 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2011, in the 5700 block of  Cypress Creek Drive, when 58-year-old Ansel Donovan Whitelocke, of Hyattsville, was located inside an apartment building with trauma to his body. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Three days later, Clifton Antion Turner, 42, of Laurel, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds to his body in the parking lot in the 3900 block of Bexley Place in Silver Hill.

Just 24 hours later, on Jan. 5, three more homicides occurred in the county. Just before 2:30 a.m., Mark Andrew Davis, of District Heights, was pronounced dead on the scene from multiple gunshot wounds in Oxon Hill. As homicide detectives were investigating the homicide in Oxon Hill, Larry Junior Watkins, 38, was discovered along the roadside, in the 2200 block of Palmer Road in Temple Hills, suffering from multiple trauma to his body.  Just before midnight, the third homicide of the day occurred in Hillcrest Heights. Michael DeAngelo Layne was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds to his body. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Additionally, two 21-year-old males were shot at the same location.

In total, the county had 95 homicides in 2011. This year, Prince George’s County Police Department has kicked off a crime-fighting strategy involving 150 extra police officers each night at critical times and locations. Some of these locations include Langley Park, the Glassmanor area of Oxon Hill and parts of Suitland.
