Fourth of July fireworks

Many thanks to the University of Maryland and the City of College Park for the exciting display of fireworks on July 4! I walked to the dead end of 41st Avenue from my home to watch the fireworks.

Get your peaches at the farmers’ market

Well, folks, it is back for another season. The Hyattsville farmers’ market has returned. Farm fresh produce and artisanal products are available from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Tuesday, weather permitting, at 3505 Hamilton St., behind the former BB&T Bank. You will see me there. The peaches are my favorite.

Upcoming events

Don’t miss our city’s Summer Jam on Friday! In August, there will be an expanded National Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, Aug. 6, in a new location — Hamilton Street between Ager Road and Queens Chapel Road. There will be the usual fun and festivities that you have enjoyed in the past, plus more activities and entertainment in this larger space.

Lunch hour jazz

Enjoy a summer lunch hour listening to lively jazz music by the Marcus Mitchell Project from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at The Mall at Prince Georges. What a relaxing way to spend your lunch hour!

Emergency preparedness workshop for senior citizens

The next Aging Gracefully Educational Series workshop is at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, in the first floor multi-purpose room of the City Municipal Building. The topic is Emergency Preparedness for Seasoned Adults. For more information, please contact Emily Stowers at 301-985-5058.

Hyattsville history

Each July 4 brings back so many memories of “old Hyattsville.” All day long on the Fourth of July, there were activities at Magruder Park. The rope pulling and dunking for apples were among my favorites. Many families brought a picnic lunch and did not leave the park until the fireworks finished that night. People came from near and far just to see our fireworks. Walking home from the park on a warm summer’s night was part of the fun.
