The Rev. Shaun Foggo ordained
Best wishes to the Rev. Shaun Foggo. He was ordained a Catholic priest June 15 at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception at Catholic University. Shaun grew up in Hyattsville and attended St. Jerome’s Academy and DeMatha High School. He came back to St. Jerome’s Church on June 16 to celebrate his first Mass. A beautiful reception was held afterwards in St. Jerome’s Gold Room, and a wonderful time was had by all who attended. Although Shaun will be assigned to St. Peter’s Church in Olney, we hope to see him from time to time.
Orlando Magic selects Victor Oladipo in first round
We are so proud of Victor Oladipo. The Orlando Magic selected Victor in the first round of the NBA Draft on June 27. Oladipo attended St. Jerome’s and DeMatha before becoming a first-team All-American at Indiana University. He credits his basketball coach at St. Jerome’s, the late Dick Brown, with helping him along his path to professional basketball.
Seniors visit Pittsburgh
I was part of a seniors group that took a three-day bus trip to Pittsburgh. We took a ride on the Duquesne Incline and enjoyed a spectacular view of the city and its three rivers from the top of Mount Washington. We also visited the Nationality Rooms at the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. We enjoyed a tour of the city by boat and by bus. On our drive home, we stopped in Shanksville, Pa., where we saw the memorial to Flight 93, which crashed during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
I wish our mayor and City Council members the best of luck as they attend the municipal league convention in Ocean City. This convention has proven to be useful for local governments.
Hyattsville history: 1967
In a move discussed and debated back and forth for some time, the Hyattsville Fire Department’s paid force was transferred to Prince George’s County. The city would pay half the expenses of the 13 firefighters on the payroll, and the county would provide five additional firefighters.
