Laurel city Mayor Craig announced Friday Nov. 22 a new ramp for accessing southbound I-95 has opened. Because of ongoing construction of the Intercounty Connector near Laurel, eastbound traffic on Route 198 from West Laurel and Burtonsville has shifted to the new ramp.

Traffic from east and westbound Route 198 will now merge before entering southbound I-95, but through travel lanes of I-95 will not be affected, officials said.

The traffic shift is required because of construction of new ICC collector-distributor lanes. SHA officials said the ICC section between I-95 and Route 1 is expected to open next spring. Spokesperson for the City of Laurel , Peter Piringer told the Sentinel that construction on the ICC is moving right along, and that drivers who use Virginia Minor Road and Sweitzer Lane should be more aware of new traffic patterns and lane changes.

Piringer said he was not sure when all of the construction on the ICC would be completed, but once its done people will have a faster way of getting to Silver Spring and other parts of Montgomery County .
