Bells' pastor reassigned

Rev. Gerald L. Elston, pastor of Bells United Methodist Church in Camp Springs, has been appointed pastor of Brightwood Park U. M. Church on Jefferson Street N.W. Washington, effective July 1. He said an official goodbye to his flock at Worship Service and Fellowship Luncheon on June 26.

Pastor Elston came to Bells in 2007 when he was still a student at John Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington. He was a student minister until he graduated in May 2009. Before entering the ministry, he was an attorney for the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security.

In a letter to parishioners, he wrote, “Bells is my first love. I will never forget you.”

Where have I been?

I have returned from two and a half weeks on the road, by Greyhound to Michigan, and by car with brother Tom and sister Stella to Ravenna, Nebraska, where my mother grew up. I saw the house where she was born, and went with family members to the cemetery to exchange memories of our grandparents and other kin buried there. One is Georgie, my mother’s brother who was run over by a train when he was six.

Two nieces drove me to Colorado where I visited still more family, including grandson David McHale, his wife Nina and their children, Jack, Molly and Riley.

I Amtraked home, shocked by the miles and miles and miles of flooding by the Platt and Missouri rivers. The floods delayed my arrival in Chicago by 12 hours. Amtrak put me on a bus back to Washington, D.C.

And now you can call or email me the news I missed while I was on the road.

Message from Pepco

I know how it is: Your power goes out. But your neighbor has already called Pepco to report it. So you do not call. Bad idea. Pepco says, “Always call when your power is out.” A neighbor’s call will not indicate to Pepco that you're out of power too. Call 1-877-PEPCO-62.
